Ananda - bliss
Aphorism - a terse saying embodying a general truth, or astute observation
(see sutra)
Bhakti
- devotion, love
Chakra - wheel; in yoga chakra refer to
energy centers
Chit - knowingness
Consciousness - the state of being
conscious; awareness of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts,
surroundings, etc.
Dristhi – gazing point
Japa - continuous chanting/repetition of a mantra
Jnana - knowledge, understanding, wisdom
Karma - action/service without attachment
Mantra - the chanting of sacred words or
sounds, is a central part of yogic meditation. Mantra comes from the
combination of two syllables: "man," meaning "to reflect" or "be aware,"
and "tra," meaning "tool for" or "agent of."
Meditation – the practice by which
there is constant observation of the mind, focusing on one point and
stilling the mind in an uninterrupted flow of concentration.
Mudra - Seal or Symbolic Expression; Mud – to delight; bring delight to
chosen deity; during pranayama and meditation, a mudra helps seal prana in
and recycle it through the body, preventing it from leaking from the
fingers
Nadi - energy channels in the body, similar to the
meridians in Acupuncture
Namaste - is a combination of the two Sanskrit words: nama,
and te. Basically, nama means "to bow" and te means "you."
A gesture honoring the light in one another.
Om - the universal mantra; cosmic vibration of the universe
Pravritti - nature of the mind
Samasthiti - Sama means 'upright' or 'erect', and sthiti means
'steadiness'. This is the basic standing pose in yoga classes, and the
starting position for most of the standing postures.
Sat - truth, love
Shakti - vital force; energy
Shanti - peace
Sutra - a collection of aphorisms relating to some aspect of the conduct
of life
Ujjayi Pranayama – Victorious breath control - breathing
technique used in Ashtanga Yoga
Vinyasa - the linking of body movement with breath; can also mean a type
of yoga class
Yoga Nidra - a deep relaxation technique - yogic sleep; the body and mind
are at complete rest with complete awareness.
