Flow Yoga
Rooted in the principles of Ashtanga Yoga, Living Yoga's energetic Flow Yoga classes integrate breath and movement and increase strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health.  For those with less flexibility or injuries, modifications for postures will be given, thereby allowing every student to experience the benefits of each posture.  This class is for all levels, appropriate for the beginner as well as advanced students.
Primary Series
The Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga is known in Sanskrit as Yoga Chikitsa, which means "yoga therapy".  The specific sequence of postures is designed to cleanse and balance the body, mind and senses.  The series, when committed to memory, becomes a meditation in motion. Students range from beginners to advanced as the Primary Series is a practice for a lifetime.

Primary Series Sampler
This class will include Sun Salutation A's, Sun Salutation B's, standing postures, a "sampling" of the seated, Primary Series postures (different each class) and a modified closing sequence.  Newer students will become familiar with options for modifying postures as well as correct alignment in preparation for the full Primary Series class and/or Flow classes.  Advanced students and students who are working toward deeper expressions of the postures will have the opportunity to experience this class in a way different than the full Primary Series class, holding postures for longer periods of time/additional breaths with the opportunity to integrate an enhanced understanding of alignment.

Gentle Flow Yoga

Suitable for students new to yoga, students with injuries, and prenatal/postnatal.   Also great for students of all levels who want a more gentle practice.
This class will help students overcome injuries, will help pregnant women prepare their body and mind for labor and delivery, will ease postnatal students back to their regular practice and is perfect for those new to yoga.  We will focus on body and breath awareness, as well as building strength, flexibility and balance.  In this class students will practice sun salutations, standing postures, supported and non-supported balance postures, and seated postures.  We will also introduce/practice meditation and relaxation techniques.
Posture modifications will be offered to suit your level, your injury and for each trimester of pregnancy.

**For pregnant students:  Although most health care professional will enthusiastically give the go ahead for beginning or continuing yoga during your pregnancy, we request that you speak with your health care professional before signing up.  Also, it is required that you meet with Maureen prior to attending class so she can evaluate where you are at in your current practice and/or discuss your pre-pregnancy fitness level.  If you have high blood pressure and/or complications during your pregnancy, it may be suggested that you take a break from your practice or continue your practice with one-on-one private sessions.

Principles of Alignment
Based on the Universal Principles of Alignment of Anusara Yoga (called 'Universal" because once learned, they apply to all poses), each class will explore a particular alignment focus in a variety of poses. This class is open to students of all levels.  Beginners or those returning to yoga will find this class a comprehensive introduction to the basic yoga asanas.  Regular practitioners will find that the instruction will enhance their practice as they integrate the principles into their ongoing asana practice.

Meditation
As we explore the way of yoga, we may sense that there is more to know and learn in addition to what is discovered in posture practice. In the classical system of yoga, becoming still and quiet, in body, mind and breath, is the recommended next step.  In our meditation gatherings, we will explore a broad range of techniques to begin or advance a meditation practice. All levels are welcome to drop in.

At Living Yoga we want to extend many opportunities for students to be able to fit our class times into their schedule as well as offer students the opportunity to begin where they are on any particular day at any Living Yoga class.  Therefore, all our classes (except the Friday night Mysore/Practice with the Teacher) are for students of all levels and students can attend any class without prior experience.  At any given class there may be a student who is experiencing their first yoga class, a student who is returning after years away from the practice, and a student who practices 3 times per week.  The individuality of all students contributes to the collective energy of each class, making each experience unique and special.

If you are new to the practice and do not feel ready to come to an all levels class, you could begin with one of the Intro Series, the Gentle Flow classes or the Primary Series Sampler and join the regular classes once you feel comfortable doing so.  Or if you would like to come to classes while learning more about all aspects of the practice, you could attend classes and simultaneously attend Living Yoga's Intro Series.
If you have any questions and/or would like guidance about where to begin your yoga practice, please call us, e-mail us or come by the studio/boutique.
