ASHTANGA - PRIMARY SERIES

The Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India is known in Sanskrit as yoga chikitsa, meaning "yoga therapy".

This fast-paced invigorating practice of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive sequence of postures—a process which produces intense internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. The series, when committed to memory, becomes a meditation in motion.

Prior yoga experience and proficiency or a high level of athletic conditioning recommended.
Be prepared to sweat.

*We welcome visitors on a drop-in basis to the led Primary Series classes and encourage resident practitioners to make a monthly commitment to Living Yoga's Mysore program as part of their daily life to help refine their practice and safely break down each asana in the series at their own pace and ability in order to see the benefits and growth in their own practice.

*Please take note of the Mysore class timings. The studio doors are open for a two hour time period and students are welcome to come and go as their schedule allows throughout this allotted time.

At Living Yoga we want to extend many opportunities for students to be able to fit our class times into their schedule as well as offer students the opportunity to begin where they are on any particular day at any Living Yoga class.  Therefore, all our classes
(except for Led Primary Series classes) are for students of all levels and students can attend any class without prior experience.  At any given class there may be a student who is experiencing their first yoga class, a student who is returning after years away from the practice, and a student who practices 3 times per week.  The individuality of all students contributes to the collective energy of each class, making each experience unique and special.
If you are new to the practice and do not feel ready to come to an all levels class, we recommend beginning with the Mysore or Gentle Flow classes and join the other classes once you feel comfortable doing so.
**For pregnant students: Ashtanga Yoga should not be practiced during the first two months of your pregnancy. Although most health care professional will enthusiastically give the go ahead for beginning or continuing yoga during your pregnancy, we request that you speak with your health care professional prior to attending classes.  Also, it is required that  you talk to the teacher leading that particular class prior to attending class so they can evaluate where you are at in your current practice and/or discuss your pre-pregnancy fitness level.  If you have high blood pressure and/or complications during your pregnancy, it may be suggested that you take a break from your practice or continue your practice with one-on-one private sessions.

If you have any questions and/or would like guidance about where to begin your yoga practice, please call us, e-mail us or come by the studio.
